Product Design

This Philips air fryer comes in a glossy black finish. In terms of design, it is similar to most other air fryers on the market. A food tray is inside a pull-out basket you can remove by pressing a button on the handle. The food tray measures about 18 x 18 cm. In the basket, there is a starfish-like design that allows hot air to circulate thoroughly. This unit measures around 25 x 30 cm and takes up quite a bit of counter space.

When placing food on the tray, you should be careful not to close the perforations completely. It is also advisable not to line food trays with aluminium foil or parchment paper.

There is a heating coil at the top of the air fryer, above the food tray, and a fan above the heating element. Food is cooked with hot air blown by the fan. Air fryers function like mini-convection ovens.

Product Performance

The Philips Essential Air fryer HD9252/90 excelled at cooking fries. By using the potato program on the air fryer, and following the preparation steps in the NutriU app – 1Tbsp of oil for 1.1lb / 500g batch – the cooked fries had crisp exteriors that gave them a satisfying crunch, while the insides were fluffy and soft. Additionally, the chicken wings also had crisp skin but remained succulent on the inside – although we found that the frying basket could hold only five wings at a time, so this dish might not be sufficient for two people. Time and temperature didn’t need to be adjusted – the results were perfect.

Many foods will require oil to be cooked in the Philips Essential Air fryer, even items such as chicken wings that can be cooked in rival air fryers like the Instant Pot air fryer without any oil. Although the design of the frying basket does allow fat to drain away, it does reduce the healthiness of the meal you are preparing despite creating crunchy, crisp skin on the wings and a satisfying crunch on the fries.

Using the dedicated frozen food program, we also cooked 1.1lbs / 500g of frozen steak-cut fries in the air fryer. Although most of the fries were cooked, those in the center of the frying basket required more cooking due to the smaller capacity of the Philips Essential Airfryer. Additionally, the level of browning was not uniform across the entire batch.

Although the Essential Airfryer provides an audible and visual alert on completion of cooking, we were disappointed that we weren’t reminded to turn or shake the food part way through cooking (this ensures items are evenly browned). However, it was the quietest air fryer we’ve tested to date, registering 52db on our meter, which is about the volume of a refrigerator. During cooking, the exterior casing remained cool to the touch.

• The price of this air fryer is among the highest on the market.
